{short description of image}The IRD Duhallow Food Training Centre opened in Boherbue in late 1994. It has become one of the flagship projects of the IRD Duhallow LEADER Programme.
Those in the process of setting up a business in the food industry require premises which will meet all of the stringent food hygiene laws, furthermore training in production and advice on packaging is essential if the concept is to become a commercial reality. The Duhallow Food Training Centre is in a position to provide units which meet all of these requirements and, in addition, can provide the advice of a full time trainer Marie Fenlon who has vast experience of many aspects of the food industry.
The recent EU White Paper Growth Competitiveness, Employment - the challenges and the way forward into the 21st Century recognises the importance of services in the future generation of jobs in rural areas. Among the seventeen areas of expansion within the service sector identified by the Commission are home help, caring, security, local public transport services, tourism, audio visual services, culture heritage & development, environment, new information and communication technologies.
Against this background and following on from our success in developing{short description of image} local services under the LEADER Programme, the Food Training Centre is the base for development of a community based social economy enterprise.
The sale of hot - plated meals to homes, schools and local businesses prepared in the Centre is projected to generate ten full - time job equivalents by the end of 1998.

In April 1998 the IRD Duhallow Centre was designated as a registered centre by the National Council for Vocational Awards. Training modules based on food nutrition and returning to work are ongoing. Trainees are awarded N.C.V.A. certificates on succesfully completing these courses.
